Pios Trend in Right Direction with CCIW Win

Carroll picks up 10th win

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's soccer team continues to push for a post-season berth with a decisive 2-0 win over the Carthage Firebirds on Wednesday night at Schneider Stadium. Elizabeth Weinberg scored and assisted on both goals this evening.

The Pioneers (10-3-2, 2-2-1 CCIW) pick up their 10th win of the 2021 season, the most since 2017. The Pioneers sit in fifth place in the CCIW standings, five points back from Augustana in fourth place. Carroll dominated the Firebirds in the first half, outshooting them 13-2. Carroll ended the game with 19 shots, five of which came from Grace Tumilty. Carroll held Carthage to just one corner kick and only four shots on goal.

Carroll started quickly with three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the contest. The First CU goal scored by Jessica Stepien came from all the way on the other side of the field. Weinberg led a header over to Kaitlyn Zanon, who touched it over to Stepien to score from outside the box and beat the keeper low left.

Weinberg came back three minutes after the break, scoring after grabbing an errant clear attempt from the defense and scoring low left from 10 yards out.

The Firebirds had more possession in the second half, getting off nine shots, but the Carroll defense kept the game out of reach, as the Pios picked up CCIW win number two this season.

Carroll will play in its final regular-season game at Schneider Stadium on Saturday, October 23 against Illinois Wesleyan. The Pioneers and Titans last played at Schneider in 2019, but Carroll gave up four second-half goals in the 1-4 loss.
