WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's soccer team fell in a crucial CCIW contest to the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan. Carroll was bested by a score of 1-3, despite a penalty kick by
Amanda Rose.
The Pioneers (10-4-2, 2-3-1 CCIW) responded to a poor shooting first half by taking 12 shots in the second period, including nine total shots on goal. Carroll had plenty of opportunities, taking eight corner kicks, and getting 14 free kicks on Titan's fouls.
Grace Tumilty led the Pios with five shots and four on goal in 90 minutes of play.
The Titans got off to a hot side and went up within the first ten minutes off a left side goal crossed to the right in the eighth minute. After a few Pioneer substitutions, Caelyn Steffens for the Titans scored again in the 27
th minute in a similar fashion.
Elizabeth Weinberg had a close opportunity in the 38
th minute but was unable to capitalize.
Even after a Titan goalie change the Pios' shots were still being saved. It wasn't until Rose's PK in the 75
th minute that the Pioneers cut the lead to one. Steffens completed the hat-trick in the 78
th minute to go up 3-1 and keep the game out of reach for Carroll. Tumilty had two extremely close opportunities in the 89
th minute but a deep clear put the game on ice.
Carroll finishes the season on the road with two more games. The Pioneers visit North Park on Wednesday, October 27.
