Women’s Soccer Drops Heartbreaker against Wheaton

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's soccer team fell in a heartbreaking 1-2 fashion against CCIW opponent Wheaton on Saturday night. Maddie Belo scored the lone goal in the loss.

The Pioneers (8-3-1, 0-2-0 CCIW) fall for the second time in the last three games, both to CCIW teams. Both teams were evenly matched, with 12 shots each. Carroll held a slight advantage in the second half, getting off 7 total shots. Carroll and Wheaton both made five saves, with Carroll making four in the first half. Wheaton dominated on creating corner kick opportunities, however, out tallying the Pioneers 12-1 in the category. Amanda Rose, Grace Tumilty, Elizabeth Weinberg, and Kaitlyn Zanon all tied with two shots apiece to lead the team.

Wheaton's first goal came rather quickly and unexpectedly into the contest, scoring on a penalty kick in the 12th minute on a foul inside the box. Belo scored the equalizer on a perfect cross by Tumilty. Tumilty got the ball in the corner and placed it just in front of Belo's right foot to roll past the keeper. Wheaton almost broke the tie with five seconds remaining in the first half, but Rachel Jenewein stopped the attack with a save.

Carroll came out of the gates quickly, with shots from Zanon and a shot on goal from Weinberg that was saved bottom center of the goal. Wheaton's game-winner in the 53rd minute of the game was a chip shot that Jenewein wasn't able to corral. Carroll had three more shots on net before the final buzzer, but nothing was able to cross the line.

The Pioneers have a week to regroup and refocus before a bout with Elmhurst University on Saturday, October 9 at 7:30 PM. The Pioneers are 5-1-2 in the last eight meetings with the Bluejays.
