DE PERE, Wis. – The Carroll University women's basketball team defeated the Green Knights of St. Norbert on Saturday afternoon by a score of 71-56. Carroll exploded for 27 points in the third quarter to give them the advantage.
Katie Rohner finished with a team-high 19 points on 6-9 shooting and going 6-6 at the free-throw line.
Allison Thompson picked up her first career double-double, notching 12 points and 11 rebounds. Rohner, Thompson, and
Natalie Palzkill were named to the all-tournament team, with Rohner taking the MVP title.
The Pioneers (3-0, 0-0 CCIW) are outscoring their opponents by 26 points per game to start the season. Carroll shot 43.1% from the floor tonight but struggled to find their stroke behind the three-point line. The Pio bench squad racked up 33 points, led by Palzkill's and Thompson's 12 points each. Carroll dominated with 36 points in the paint and scored 18 points off 20 turnovers.
Rohner scored the team's first four points of the game in the paint, followed up by an
Elizabeth Behrndt (11 PTS) layup to tie the game 6-6 with 5:48 remaining in the first quarter. Palzkill tied the game with seven seconds left in the quarter with a layup from Thompson. In the second quarter, St. Norbert took a three-point lead with 2:45 remaining. Carroll worked on a 4-2 swing to cut the lead to one by halftime.
Theresa Wichser (3 PTS) scored her first bucket of the game on Carroll's first possession of the second half to give Carroll the lead. Wichser's three sparked a 7-0 run to take a six-point lead. After St. Norbert scored their first basket with 7:06 on the clock, Behrndt's three-point-play led to a 20-8 Pioneer run. Carroll went into the fourth quarter up 16 on the Green Knights. Rohner made a layup in the paint to start the fourth and gave Carroll the largest lead of the night at 18 points. Norbert cut the lead to 10 with 4:58 remaining, but steady free throw shooting by Palzkill, Rangel, and Rohner kept Carroll out in front the remainder of the game.
The Pioneers finally make their first appearance of the season at Van Male Field House on November 18, as the Pioneers host Lawrence University.
