TJ Pfaffle went 2-for-5 with a double and drove in a run as the Carroll University baseball team lost to Rockford University 4-3 in a hard-fought, 11-inning nonconference game at Frame Park on Friday afternoon.
It was the first extra-inning loss of the season for Carroll, which dropped its second straight to fall to 4-3 overall.
Rockford scored what proved to be the winning run as the result of an error with two outs in the top of the 11th inning.
The Regents, who improved to 3-2 overall, scored single runs in the opening three innings to claim an early lead.
Carroll, which finished with eight hits, answered with its first run on a solo home run by
Eli Syverson - the first of his collegiate career - with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Pfaffle delivered a two-out RBI single in the sixth as Carroll trimmed the deficit to 3-2.
Mason Hege responded with a one-out game-tying RBI double in the ninth for the Pioneers, who finished with four extra-base hits (including three doubles) but stranded nine runners on base.
Seth Smith allowed two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks through four complete innings in making the start for Carroll.
Griffin Klein pitched a scoreless, two-hit fifth with
Bryce Spaulding working a confidence-building unblemished two-hit sixth and seventh for the Pioneers.

Andrew Stekiel and
Dawson Kiphart each pitched one inning, combining for three hits, seven strikeouts and two walks. Stekiel, who yielded one hit with two strikeouts and two walks, was officially credited with the loss.
Rockford sophomore right-hander Christian Dahlstrom earned the victory, yielding one run on one hit with seven strikeouts and one walk through 4 1/3 innings.
The Regents had 13 hits in the contest, including a homer and three doubles.
