WAUKESHA, Wis. - Senior designated hitter
Dylan Callahan hit a two-out, two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Carroll University baseball team defeated Concordia University of Wisconsin 4-3 in a season-opening nonconference game at Frame Park on Monday afternoon.
It was a dramatic come-from-behind victory for Carroll, which fittingly was playing its first game on its newly renovated state-of-the-art field.
As Carroll trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th with a runner on first base and two outs, Callahan responded to the pressure-packed challenge by hitting a towering shot over the left-center field fence.
Senior shortstop
Brad Vosters, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored the tying run during the winning sequence.
Senior right-fielder
Alec Honickel went 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run for Carroll, which collected seven hits in the contest. Senior first baseman
Mitchell Massino and junior center fielder
Josh Kolb each had a triple with senior catcher
TJ Pfaffle and junior third baseman
Benton Holly each adding a hit.
CUW scored single runs in both the first and fourth innings.
Trailing 2-0, the Pioneers responded as Kolb scored on a run-scoring sacrifice fly by senior second baseman
Danny Glampe in the bottom of the seventh and later tied the game on an RBI triple by Massino in the eighth.
CUW reclaimed a one-run lead on an RBI fly out in the 10th, ultimately setting the stage for Callahan's heroics.
Senior left-hander
Curtis Sheahan pitched a four-hitter with two earned runs, seven strikeouts and two walks through the first four complete innings for the Pioneers. Freshman right-hander
Brett Buzzelli followed with three strong, scoreless innings yielding just one hit with three strikeouts and one walk.
Senior lefty
Tyler Love pitched a scoreless eighth and junior right-hander
Jake Nitch worked an unblemished ninth.
Sophomore right-hander
Bryce Spaulding started the 10th before being relieved by eventual winning junior right-hander
Josh Nitch, who yielded a single resulting in a tense bases-loaded situation, gave up the go-ahead run on a one-out sacrifice fly, then forced a fly out. The inning ended as the Carroll defense stepped up and picked off a CUW baserunner attempting to steal.
