CHICAGO, Ill. - The Carroll University baseball team swept North Park University in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Holmgren Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 6-0 and the finale 9-3.
It was the first conference twin bill sweep of the season for Carroll, which improved to 6-7 in the conference standings and 12-9 overall.
The Pioneers, who combined for 24 hits, have won three of their last four games.
GAME 1
Brett Buzzelli pitched a four-hit shutout with three strikeouts and one walk to earn a complete-game victory in the opener.
It was the first conference shutout of the season and second overall for the Pioneers.
Buzzelli, a 5-foot-10 freshman right-hander from Homer Glen, Ill. who improved to 2-0 overall, faced 33 hitters and remained consistent throughout the nine-inning outing, forcing 11 fly outs and 10 ground balls.
Dylan Callahan went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored to power a 12-hit offensive attack for Carroll.
Justin Baker went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a run for the Pioneers, who finished with three extra-base hits.
Benton Holly followed with two hits and drove in a run.
TJ Pfaffle and
Josh Kolb each added two hits.
Carroll scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the first on a clutch, two-out bases-loaded single to left field by Baker.
The Pioneers extended the lead to 4-0 in the eighth as Holly and Baker each scored as the result of a throwing error and Kolb followed with an RBI single to left field.
The Pioneers' final two runs came in the ninth on an RBI single to left-center field by Baker and a run-scoring single to right field by Holly.
GAME 2
Baker went 3-for-5 with a double and scored a run to propel a 12-hit offensive attack for the Pioneers in the finale.
Carroll scored five runs on four hits and took advantage of an error in the top of the fourth to overcome a two-run deficit, fueled by a two-run single to center field by
Alec Honickel.
Callahan scored from third base on an error, Kolb delivered what became the winning run on an RBI single to left field and Holly crossed the plate as the result of a hit batsman with the bases loaded to round out the key rally.
The Pioneers, who are currently 4-5 on the road this season, added four runs on five hits in the seventh, including an RBI singles by Holly,
Danny Glampe and
Brad Vosters. Glampe scored the final run on a bases-loaded walk.
Honickel and Vosters each followed with two hits for Carroll.
Curtis Sheahan was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and four walks through five complete innings.
Sheanhan, a 6-foot-4 senior left-hander from Madison, Wis. who recently earned CCIW Pitcher of the Week honors and improved to 2-1 overall, faced 27 hitters and forced six groundouts with four fly outs.
Drew McDermid worked the final four innings, yielding one run on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Brandon Davis went 2-for-3 and scored a run for North Park, which dropped to 3-12 in conference and 8-12 overall.
