ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Carroll University baseball team split with second-place Augustana College in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Swanson Stadium's Brunner Field on Sunday afternoon, winning the opener 10-5 but losing the finale 7-4.
It was the fifth conference doubleheader split this season for Carroll, currently 13-18 in the league standings and 19-20 overall with one regular-season game remaining on the schedule.
The Pioneers, who defeated Augustana for the first time since May 3, 2019 (a 5-1 home-field victory at Frame Park), can reach the 20-win plateau with a home-field victory over North Park University on Wednesday.
Alec Honickel went 5-for-8 with three RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base on the day for Carroll, which remains in sole possession of fifth place in the CCIW standings.
GAME 1
Honickel went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base to lead a nine-hit offensive attack for Carroll in the opener.
Benton Holly went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in a run,
Honickel drove in the Pioneers' first runs of the contest in the top of the first inning on a two-run RBI single to center field.
Carroll extended its lead to 3-0 in the second on a run-scoring sacrifice flyout left field by
Brad Vosters.
Augustana, which entered the day in sole possession of second place in the conference standings and hovering just outside of the d3baseball.com Top 25, responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and three runs in the seventh to claim a 5-3 lead.
Carroll showcased its resilience by answering with five runs on five hits and taking advantage of an error in the momentum-shifting eighth, including an RBI single to left field by
Benton Holly, a run-scoring single to right-center field by Honickel, an RBI double to right field by
Nick Angus and a two-run single to left-center field by
Justin Baker.
The Pioneers' final runs came in the ninth on a two-run home run by
Mitchell Massino (his eighth of the season).
Brett Buzzelli was the starting pitcher, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and six walks and a hit batsman through 5 2/3 innings.
Josh Nitch came in relief of Buzzelli with runners on first and second with two outs in the sixth and forced an inning-ending flyout (on a hard-hit line drive) for Carroll, which utilized five pitchers.
Josh Streu worked the seventh and earned the victory, yielding two runs on two hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Dawson Kiphart pitched a scoreless eighth and
Jake Nitch finished with an unblemished ninth to preserve a victory.
Griffen Pschigoda went 2-for-5 and drove in a run for Augustana.
GAME 2
Vosters went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs to power a 13-hit offensive attack for Carroll in the series finale.
Honickel,
TJ Pfaffle and
Danny Glampe each followed with two hits for the Pioneers.
Trailing 1-0 after four innings, Carroll answered with three runs in the top of the fifth.
The rally was ignited on an RBI single to right field by
Trevor Benz followed up with a two-run single by Vosters.
Augustana responded with a single run in the bottom of the sixth, four in the game-changing seventh and added a single run in the eighth.
Carroll's final run came on an RBI double to left field by Vosters.
Curtis Sheahan took the pitching loss and dropped to 4-3 overall, yielding four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks through six complete innings.
Mitchell Owens went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Augustana, which improved to 21-7 in conference and 29-7 overall to win the regular-season series 3-1.
