Pioneers’ Offense Surges in Second Half Win

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's soccer team defeated UW-Stevens Point in a final tune-up before CCIW play begins Saturday. The Pioneers defeated the Pointers 4-1 off of three second half goals. Elizabeth Weinberg and Grace Tumilty both tallied three points, scoring and assisting on goals.

The Pioneers (7-1-1) Remain unbeaten at Schneider Stadium this season. Carroll Put up 10 total shots, three of which coming from Weinberg. Rachel Jenewein had a career-high seven saves on 10 shots faced, eight of which were on goal. In what turned into a chippy game, the Pioneers recorded 21 fouls, including a yellow card mid-way through the second half.

The Pointers held solid possession in the beginning of the contest, getting off two shots, including one on goal in the first 10 minutes. Weinberg and the offense settled in, scoring from high outside the box and going low left on the keeper. The Pointers tied it soon after in the 32nd minute, following a free kick. Carroll threatened with a corner kick with 10 seconds remaining, but could not cash in before the halftime buzzer.

Back to back offside penalties began the second half. Once the Pioneers retained possession in the box, a Pointer foul sent Amanda Rose to take a penalty kick. Rose went high right to net her first career goal in the 54th minute. After a shocking twist of events, Carroll was awarded a free-kick off what would have been a goal scored, but was called offside. Tumilty used that to her advantage, playing a deep ball and taking on two defenders herself to score from below the keeper.

With a steady 3-1 lead, the Pioneers were taking advantage of their opportunities, and a corner taken by Weinberg landed perfectly for a Belo header, for the senior to cash in on her fourth goal of the season.

Carroll begins its CCIW season at Augustana on Saturday night. The Pioneers last played Augustana in Rock Island, Illinois, but suffered a 0-1 defeat. Carroll is 1-1-2 against the Vikings since rejoining the CCIW.
