WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's soccer team scored a lone goal in a tough matchup with Beloit on Wednesday night at Schneider Stadium. Carroll, who won 1-0, scored on a penalty kick off the foot of
Maddie Belo in the 61
st minute.
The Pioneers (8-2-1, 0-1 CCIW) bounce back after a conference loss on Saturday. A banged-up Pio squad took to the turf against the Buccaneers, and outshot Beloit 15-1, including 10-1 in the first half. The difference-maker was the shots on goal, with only four shots on target for Carroll to Beloit's one.
Grace Tumilty led with four shots, but only one found the goalkeeper's gloves. Seven of the 15 shots were blocked by Bucs defenders.
Carroll got started early, forcing one of seven corner kicks in the first three minutes. Tumilty forced a shot on goal in the 9
th minute, only to be saved top right by the keeper. The Pios held the ball steadily in the first half, staying in their attacking half for 88% of their possession.
Elizabeth Weinberg had an open net after beating the keeper on the high side of the goal, but a terrific team save by Beloit kept the score 0-0 through one.
Weinberg had an opportunity to rip a shot off at point-blank range five minutes into the second half but was called offside on the play. In the 61
st minute, a handball by Beloit on the high side of the box gave Carroll its best opportunity to score. Belo lined up for the PK to drill it top left of the goal. Carroll kept the pressure on the remainder of the game, coming away with four more corners, but Beloit kept the ball out of the net well.
Carroll jumps back into CCIW games with its first home conference game since 2019. Carroll hosts the reigning conference champion Wheaton Thunder, who the Pioneers fell 0-2 last time they met in 2019.
