DANSVILLE, Va. – The Carroll University women's soccer team cruised to victory on Sunday afternoon with an 8-1 decision over Averett. The Pioneers score eight goals in a game for the first time since 2015. Sophomore
Elizabeth Weinberg scored her first collegiate hat trick in the first half, becoming the first Pioneer since Delaney Pruitt in 2016 to score 3+ goals in a game, and the first to record seven points since Rachel Van Sluys in 2015.
The Pioneers (2-0, 0-0 CCIW) recorded 13 shots in the first half and 15 total for the game. 11 of the 15 were on target.
Rachel Jenewein had three saves in her 45 minutes of play in the first half. Weinberg led the team with shots on goals and total shots with four. Four different Pioneers tallied assists, including Weinberg,
Kaitlyn Zanon, Simone Lippman, and
Ally Scoma.
Carroll wasted no time getting out of the gates and scoring goals. Weinberg's first goal came at the 2' mark, scoring from the right side to beat the charging keeper. Just under four minutes later, Weinberg received a cross from Lippman in the 8-yard box to beat the goalie low right. The Pios regained possession and forced a corner kick from Zanon. Zanon's kick landed perfectly to Belo's left foot to score for the third time in under 10 minutes.
Jo Ueland scored her first goal off a rebound from the keeper, which was first shot by Weinberg. Weinberg picked up her third goal after a breakaway to beat the backline at the 15-minute mark. Zanon picked up a goal of her own at the 20' mark on a free-kick from an Averett foul.
Ava Style scored on a header from Scoma, and
Abby Paglia knocked in a PK to make it an 8-0 game in the 32
nd minute. Averett was able to net a goal in the 86
th minute of the game, beating a charging
Caitlin Fitzsimons.
The Pioneers have one more game on their Virginia Trip, scheduled for tomorrow at 11 AM central against Southern Virginia.
