BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Carroll University women's soccer team escaped a thriller in their second game in as many days in Virginia. Senior
Kaitlyn Zanon scored the game-winning penalty kick in the 96
th minute to give the Pioneers the 4-3 overtime win over the Southern Virginia Knights.
The Pioneers start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2009. In their closest game yet, the Pios were fairly even with the Knights in shots, winning the battle 14-13.
Elizabeth Weinberg led the team in total shots with four, While Zanon was the only Pioneer with multiple shots on goal. Carroll posted two assists as well, coming from Weinberg and
Susie Lai.
Rachel Jenewein made five saves compared to the Knight's three during all three periods.
Carroll jumped out quickly in the 10
th minute with a goal by
Maddie Belo, that was assisted by Lai. The next 30 minutes were back and forth by both teams until SVU tied the game on an unassisted goal in the 41
st minute. Carroll quickly responded 17 seconds later with an
Ally Scoma goal assisted by Weinberg.
Zanon extended the lead to 3-1 in the 51
st minute soon after attempting a corner kick. The Knights stormed back by scoring two goals, including the equalizer, in the 76
th and the 81
st minute. Zanon had an opportunity at the end of regulation but missed the shot wide. Five minutes into the overtime period, a penalty in the box led to a Zanon PK to end the game instantly.
Carroll returns to Wisconsin and hosts UW-Platteville on Wednesday, September 8 at 4:30 PM. Carroll is 3-0 against the Pioneers of Platteville since 2013, including a 7-1 win in 2017.
