WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's soccer scored in the 85
th minute to avoid the upset loss to the Carthage Firebirds on Wednesday night, as the score ended in a 1-1 draw.
Grace Tumilty scored the equalizer in the second half while finishing with nine shots on the night.
The Pioneers (8-2-2, 2-0-1 CCIW) finished with 25 shots, 14 of which were on target, as they held Carthage to just seven looks at goal. Fitzsimon's allowed the Carthage chip shot but put up four saves in the draw. The Pioneers took four chances out of the corner and held the ball for 60% of the game. 70% of the time they had possession, Carroll was in their attacking half of the field.
Tumilty took two quick shots to start the game, one of which was saved by the Carthage keeper, who put up 13 saves on the night. Tumilty took Carroll's first five shots before
Elizabeth Weinberg took an attempt. Carroll rotated to their bench but none of the reserves were able to record shots. Carthage scored unassisted in the 42
nd minute to head into halftime with a lead.
Carroll went on to pepper 15 more shots against the Firebirds in the second half, as Carthage racked up 10 saves over that same amount of time. With just over 5 minutes remaining,
Ally Scoma ran a set piece in the near side corner that found the top of Tumilty's head. The ball crossed the line before the goalie could knock it away. Carroll had two more looks at goal in the final minutes but could not take the lead.
The Pioneers continue their CCIW journey this Saturday, October 8, at Illinois Wesleyan with a 1 PM kickoff in Bloomington, Illinois.
