WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's basketball team fell to the University of Dubuque on Saturday night by the score of 53-68.
Aaron Wafford led the group with 15 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
Justin Steinike added 14 points with for rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team of the Pioneer Tipoff Classic.
The Pioneers (0-2) held Dubuque to under 40% shooting, but Carroll only shot 34% from the field, and made just 7-24 three pointers. Carroll foul trouble gave Dubuque 18 opportunities at the free throw line. Dubuaue pulled in 46 rebounds, but Carroll forced 10 turnovers and came away with six steals.
Carroll kept the battle close in the early parts of the first half, leading 10-9 less than five minutes in. Dubuque scored 13 unanswered points as the Pios were in a scoring drought that broke at 9:45 thanks to a Wafford jumper.
Kobe Simpson's three-point basket cut the lead down to six with two minutes to go, but the Spartans went into halftime up eight points. The Pioneers were 3-13 from three at halftime.
Dubuque quickly pushed their lead back up to ten twice, but
Josh Hudgens and Wafford each scored just before Steinike was able to cut the deficit down to five. The Spartans retook control on a lengthy 13-2 run that pushed their lead up to 16 points. Dubuque was up to a 23-point lead with 5:48 to go, but Carroll cut into the lead with the help of three-point baskets from Steinike and
Ethan Balinao. Despite efforts from Wafford and
Kobe Simpson, the Pioneers were unable to get back into the lead.
Carroll hosts Northland College next week Friday, November 18 at 7 PM in Van Male Field House. Carroll beat Northland in the team's first-ever meeting last year.
