WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University Pioneers dropped 90 points for the first time since November 10, 2019 in a 90-74 victory over Northland College on Friday night in Van Male Field House. Interim Head Coach
Taylor Jannsen won his first game as the leader of the Pioneers.
Kobe Simpson scored a career-high 18-points with three assists and three rebounds.
Justin Steinike pulled in a team-high seven boards.
The Pioneers (1-2) went 13-32 from three, good for 40.6%. Overall, Carroll shot 47.9% from the floor making 34 shots. Carroll assisted on 18 shots, led by four from
Ethan Balinao. The Pioneers had five Pios score in double digits, four of the five came off the bench as the Pioneer bench scored 52 points. Carroll only turned the ball over 12 times and created 10 steals.
Carroll got off to a 5-0 lead early but shortly surrendered those five points.
Josh Hudgens made two straight three-pointers to help Carroll go up by six five minutes into the first half. Steinike and
Tyler Miller both connected from behind the arc as well and pushed the Pio lead to 12.
Justin Gruber gave Carroll the first 20-point lead of the game with a three-pointer. Northland cut it back to 13 with 3:12 left in the period, but Carroll ended the half with four straight points from the Simpson brothers to enter halftime up 45-28. Carroll made 7-19 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.
Both teams battled and came out slow in the second half, but Northland was able to get the Carroll lead down to nine with 13:10 left to play after a 13-2 run. Gruber knocked in back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead back up to 15 shortly after the Lumberjack run. With the Lumberjacks beginning to threaten again, K Simpson checked in and knocked down two straight three-pointers to give Carroll command back with under 5:00 to play. The Pios spent time at the free throw line, cashing in on 7-11 attempts to seal the game.
Carroll will hit the hardwood again on Sunday, November 20 as they take on IIT at 6 PM in Van Male Field House.
