HOLLAND, Mich. – The Carroll University women's lacrosse team fell in its season opener to Hope by a score of 6-21. It is the second consecutive season the Pioneers have started the season with a loss.
Katrina Hardin led the team with three goals to go with seven shots on goal.
Ariana Cullam picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Clara Jelacic had six draw controls.
The Pioneers (0-1) started with 10 shots in the first half but slowed down in the second to finish with just 15 total. The Pioneers collected four saves from the stick of
Rebecca McDaniel. After 20 turnovers in the first half, Carroll played better in the second half with just ten. The Pios went 9-20 on clear attempts and won 12 draw controls.
Hope was on the board within the first minute of the game after controlling the opening draw. The Pioneers played good defense before allowing two more goals with 7:41 left in the opening quarter. Hope took a 5-0 lead after a turnover from the Pioneers with under four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Jelacic scored the first Pioneer goal and Hardin followed it up with another one a minute later. Hope scored on a free-position goal two minutes into the second quarter to push their lead to 7-2. Hardin was fouled inside the sector and was awarded a free position attempt. Jelacic took advantage of the opportunity and passed it off to Hardin for the third Pioneer goal of the game. Jelacic and Hardin scored twice more in the second quarter but Hope bolstered their lead to 12-5.
Hope scored five unanswered goals to start the second half.
Grace Brockman scored her first career goal at the end of the third quarter with 30 seconds remaining. Hope scored four more times in the second half, including the final goal with 2:39 left on the clock.
The Pioneers will regroup and take on Marian on Wednesday, March 2 in Fond Du Lac at 6 PM.
