Pios fall short in confidence-building nonconference dual

Carroll edged 5-4 in loss to University of Lynchburg in second match of Spring Break trip

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Carroll University men's tennis team lost to University of Lynchburg 5-4 in a hard-fought nonconference dual meet between evenly matched programs Tuesday.
It was the second dual of a challenging three-match Spring Break road trip for Carroll, which dropped to 1-5 overall.
The Pioneers captured two victories in the singles flight and two in doubles during the confidence-building effort.
Ben Pierson won in straight sets at No. 5 singles to lead the Pioneers, defeating Nico Thomas 7-6 (10-4), 6-4.
Pierson, a junior from Janesville, Wis., earned his fourth consecutive victory to improve his individual record to 4-2 in dual competition and 5-4 overall.
Jordan Nowell followed with a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles for Carroll, defeating Jackson Scott 6-0, 6-0.
Nowell, a senior from Waukesha, Wis., claimed his third straight victory to improve to 3-3 in duals and 5-3 overall.
Luke Barter, a junior from Buffalo Grove, Ill., and Ian Hofland, a sophomore from La Crosse, Wis., combined for a victory at No. 2 doubles, defeating Cooper Brewen and Christian Kumar by an 8-3 margin to improve to 1-4 in dual competition and 1-7 overall.
Carroll's final victory came as the No. 3 doubles tandem of Pierson and Nowell defeated Thomas and Scott 8-2 to improve to 4-2 in duals and 4-5 overall.
The Pioneers are scheduled to face Greenville University in a nonconference dual Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. (EST)
