Pios Finishes Spring Break 7-3

On Friday, March 19, the Carroll University softball team finished their spring break trip with a 7-3 recrod, including 2-0 on the final day of competition against Southern Maine and Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Game One. --The Carroll Pioneers won a nailbiter on Friday, taking down the Southern Maine Huskies by the score of 4-1.

Grace Bradley (2-2) got the win for Carroll (7-4). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out four.

Kaylee Learman led the way offensively for the Pioneers, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and three RBIs. Sierra Grubor put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Grubor came across to score the lone run of the inning for Carroll and get them on the board.

The Huskies then tied the ballgame at one before the Pioneers came back to reclaim their advantage in the fifth inning. Carroll scored twice on Learman's two-run homer, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Pioneers.

Carroll held Southern Maine without a run before building their lead to 4-1 in the seventh inning. The Pioneers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Learman. The score remained 4-1 for the rest of the game, as Carroll held on for the win.

Freshman Riley Pavelka (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Carroll (8-4). The right-hander went 2.2 shutout innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out three. Freshman Andrea Kuhne started the ballgame and went 4.1 innings, surrendering five runs, two earned, on three hits, walking two and striking out five.

Offensively, the Pioneers were led by sophomore Bridget Rath, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a double and three RBIs. Sophomore Madison Palasz compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Senior Madison Wagner came across to score the lone run of the inning for Carroll and get them on the board.

The Warriors then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead before the Pioneers got back on the board in the third. Carroll scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Rath, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Pioneers.

Carroll's lead had evaporated once the fifth inning arrived and turned into a 5-4 Wisconsin Lutheran advantage, when the Pioneers re-gained control at 6-5. The score remained 6-5 for the rest of the game, as Carroll held on for the win.
