ELMHURST, Ill. – The Carroll University men's lacrosse team faced off against Transylvania University for the first time in program history this morning, at Elmhurst University as a neutral site contest. The Pioneers fell to the new CCIW men's lacrosse program 3-26.
Isaac Williams,
Zach Mehrtens, and
Danny McGee all scored for the Pios.
The Pioneers (1-6, 0-2 CCIW) tallied seven of their 14 total shots in the first period, finding three on goal. Carroll's third quarter saw them picking up seven ground balls and winning five of 13 face-offs but went 0-1 in an extra-man opportunity. The Pios converted on 11-22 clear attempts with 23 turnovers.
Cole Faust tallied 14 saves on 63 shots faced, while
Spencer Lautner picked up three ground balls.
Carroll won the opening face-off, but turned the ball over in their offensive possession, leading to Transy's first goal. After almost a full first quarter, Williams played a pass from Mehrtens with two seconds remaining and scored to make it a 1-6 ball game. The Pios were held scoreless in the second half and went into the break down 1-11.
Danny McGee put Carroll on the board in the second half with an unassisted goal after
Spencer Lautner won the face-off. Mehrtens scored a man-down goal with 22 seconds remaining in the third quarter after a face-off win from
Joe Harrison. The Pios had another chance in the fourth quarter for a goal, but the shot was saved as Carroll remained with three goals for the afternoon.
The Pioneers will next host North Central College on April 13 at 7 PM under the lights of Schneider Stadium.
