Men’s Track Begins Outdoor Season with a Second-Place Finish

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University men's outdoor track and field team finished in second place at their own Pioneer Open meet on Sunday, recording 162 team points. Steven Hermsen, Zach Benes, Trenton Nickel, and Spencer Kirsteatter took home first place finishes.
 
In track events, Benes recorded two first-place finishes. In the 1,500-meter, Benes won with a time of 4:08.33, then won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.49. Benes was also a member of the men's 4x400 meter race team, that won with the help of Peter Marra, Nickel, and Nathan Raatz. Nickel, in his first competition as a Pioneer, won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.41. Right behind him was Raatz, Augustus Herman, and Jacob Radovan who all collected team points. Nickel, Raatz, and Troy Burkert added points in the 200-meter dash event.  Marra claimed second in the 110-meter hurdles event, while Kevin Lind and Patrick Send added team points in the 100-meter dash. Marra also added a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, with a time of 57.08. Kirsteatter won the 5000-meter run by two seconds with a time of 15:31.36. Austin Sanderfoot and Riley McDade finished seventh and eighth, respectively to add more points to the Pioneer total.
 
In field and throwing events, Marshawn Fullilove scored six points for the Pioneers in the high jump with a height of 1.75 meters. Hermsen, the reigning National Champion in the discus won by two meters with a throw of 47.53 to win the event. Hermsen's throw places him in the top 20 in the nation currently. Max Campbell finished in third behind Hermsen. Jimmy Hinkley, Hermsen, and Juan Ocampo finished third, fourth, and eighth in the men's hammer throw. Hermsen won the shot put event with Campbell in fourth, and Nickel finished with team points in the javelin throw.
