Softball Outscores North Park 12-6 in Doubleheader Split

The Carroll University softball team lost their first CCIW game of the seaosn, but bounced back with a decsieve win in a two-game split with North Park on Sunday afternoon in Chicago. 

GAME 1 | North Park 6, Carroll (WI) 5

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but ran out of outs in the 5-6 loss to North Park in game one. 

Junior Grace Bradley (4-3) got the ball to start for Carroll (12-5, 4-1) and took the loss.

Sophomore Bridget Rath led the way offensively for the Pioneers, going 1-for-1 in the ballgame with three walks. Senior Madison Wagner furnished a standout performance as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Kaylee Learman also chipped in, going 1-for-3 for Carroll with a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Pioneers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Junior Lauren Harshbarger drove in two runs for Carroll with a single, that scored freshman Kaitlyn Reed and Rath.

The Pioneers lost the lead they built in the fourth, but got back on the board in the seventh trailing 6-2. which tightened the Vikings lead to 6-5. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.

GAME 2 | Carroll (WI) 6, North Park 1

CHICAGO, Ill. --The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 6-1 win.

Freshman Riley Pavelka (3-0) got the win for Carroll (13-5, 5-1) in her first career start. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing four walks and striking out seven. 

In the batter's box, the Pioneers were paced by senior Madison Wagner, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a walk and three RBI. Senior Sierra Grubor put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Madison Palasz also chipped in for Carroll, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Carroll got an RBI single from Wagner, scoring junior Mathena Higgins from second base.

The Vikings then tied the ballgame at one before the Pioneers came back to reclaim their advantage in the second inning. Carroll pushed across a run on Grubor's two-out RBI double, which brought the Pioneers lead to 2-1.

Carroll held North Park without a run before building their lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning. The Pioneers added three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run single off the bat of Wagner.

Carroll held the Vikings scoreless before building on their lead in the sixth inning. The Pioneers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Palasz, bringing the score to 6-1 in favor of the Pios. The score remained 6-1 for the rest of the game, as the Pioneers coasted to the win.
