Carroll offense slowed down by River Falls

Fourth quarter woes stall Pioneers

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Carroll University women's lacrosse team fell to a tough UW-River Falls team by a score of 9-17 on Sunday evening. The Pioneers scored just four goals in the first half. Lexi Kaltenberg scored three times to go with one assist, while Abby Stas assisted on three goals and scored one of her own. Katrina Hardin and Clara Jelacic combined for 10 draw controls.

The Pioneers (7-4, 2-0 CCIW) were outshot 42-21 in the game, and the Pios didn't get a shot off in the fourth quarter. Alicia Van Dale took the loss but recorded 12 saves in 45 minutes while Rebecca McDaniel tallied four in 15 minutes. The Pios turned the ball over 28 times, including 10 in the fourth quarter.  The Falcons stopped the Pios from clearing the ball, as Carroll went 14-22 on clear attempts, including 2-7 in the fourth.

Clara Jelacic scored the first goal in the game, assisted by Kaltenberg. The Falcons stormed back, scoring three straight free-position goals, and tallied four more goals before Kaltenberg scored with 24 seconds left in the first quarter. Carroll found themselves down 2-7 going into the second quarter. Stas scored an unassisted goal after a foul by the Falcons early into the second. Jelacic picked up yellow card number two of the game with 12:53 left in the first half, which put her on the sidelines for the rest of the game. The flacons took advantage of Jelacic's absence with a man-up goal soon after. Kaltenberg added one more to the Pio total but the Falcons got one back as well, as they took a 9-4 lead into halftime over Carroll.

Hardin struck first in the second half to cut the deficit to four goals, but River Falls came back less than 15 seconds later scoring again. Janu Patel got into the action with two goals in the third, including a man-up goal after a UW-RF Yellow. Kaltenberg and Hardin both scored again, but the Falcons had answers for every goal, ending the third up 15-9. The Falcons added two more goals in the fourth quarter, as the Pioneers struggled to clear the ball without turning it over.

The Pioneers will head down to Chicago on 4/13 to face the reigning CCIW Tournament Champion University of Chicago. The Maroons currently are ranked in the IWLCA top 25.
