Pios split with Illinois Wesleyan in CCIW doubleheader

Holly finishes a combined 5-for-8 with a home run and three RBIs in first two games of road series

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Carroll University baseball team split with Illinois Wesleyan in a sunny, cool College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Horenberger Field on Friday afternoon, winning the opener 7-4 but losing the second game 3-0.
The Pioneers are currently 5-4 in the conference standings and 12-15 overall.
Benton Holly went a combined 5-for-8 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored in the twin bill to lead Carroll.

GAME 1
Benton Holly went 2-for-4 with a home run (his team-leading fifth of the season), three RBIs and two runs scored to power a 10-hit offensive attack for Carroll in the first game.
Mitchell Massino and Josh Kolb each contributed two hits and drove in a run for the Pioneers. Brad Vosters also collected two hits with Trevor Benz and Mason Hege each added one hit and drove in a run.
Carroll scored the first run of the game as Massino delivered an RBI single to right field in the top of the first inning.
Illinois Wesleyan tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the third.
Carroll broke the 1-1 tie by answering with three runs on four hits in the momentum-shifting fourth, fueled on a one-out RBI double down the left-field line by Benz, a run-scoring single to left field by Kolb an RBI single to left field by Mason Hege.
Illinois Wesleyan, which finished with 11 hits but stranded eight baserunners, scored a single run in the fourth to trim the deficit to 4-2.
Holly hit a three-run home run to centerfield in the fifth to help put away the game for Carroll.
The Pioneers used five pitchers in the outing including starter Bryce Spaulding, Andrew Stekiel, Dawson Kiphart, Michael Costanzo and Connor Nolen.
Spaulding, a 6-foot-2 junior right-hander from Racine, Wis., earned his second victory of the season to improve his individual record to 2-0 overall, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks through 5 2/3 innings. He threw 105 pitches and faced 27 batters, including eight fly outs and five ground outs.
Nolen, a 6-3 sophomore right-hander Connor Nolen from Poplar Grove, Ill., picked up his second save of the year by entering the game with runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the potential tying run at the plate. He threw three pitches and promptly finished with a game-ending strikeout.

GAME 2
Holly went 3-for-4 in the second game to pace Carroll's eight hit attack.
Vosters followed with two hits while Massino, Casey Mir and Clay Schult each contributed one hit in the effort.
The Pioneers stranded eight baserunners in the contest.
Jacob Duffy was the winning pitcher for Illinois Wesleyan, working seven scoreless innings with seven hits, four strikeouts and two walks.
Nick Evert took the loss, yielding two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks through three complete innings.
