BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Carroll University women's lacrosse team battled Illinois Wesleyan University in an instant classic, that came down to
Lexi Kaltenberg scoring the game-winning goal with 47 seconds left in double OT. Carroll came out victorious with an 11-10 decision after 65 minutes of game time.
Clara Jelacic scored a season-high six goals and eight points on eight shots. Jelacic re-set the school record for caused turnovers in a game with nine.
The Pioneers (6-3, 2-0 CCIW) pick up their third consecutive win in a row against the Titans, and this marks the first win at Tucci Stadium in women's lacrosse history. Carroll landed 24 shots on goal of their 35 total and was successful on 17-26 clear attempts. Led by Jelacic, Carroll won 11 draw controls, including five in the first period. The Pios sunk nine free position goals too.
The Titans were the first team to strike, just over a full minute into the contest. Carroll didn't tie the game until Jelacic's first goal at the 8:33 mark in the first.
Janu Patel scored an unassisted goal after the Titan took a one-point lead.
Katrina Hardin and Jelacic connected to score the third goal of the game as Carroll took its first lead at the 1:26 mark. Illinois Wesleyan tied the game going into the second quarter. Carroll scored four goals over the next 15 minutes, as Jelacic netted her 25
th goal of the season assisted by Stas to start the 4-1 run. Carroll scored three unanswered goals, including a buzzer-beater by
Zoe Esveldt to go into halftime up 7-4.
Both teams struggled out of the gates to find nylon in the second half, but it was the Titans who struck first. Jelacic earned a free-position attempt and cashed in with another goal to keep the Pios up three. At the start of the fourth, IWU scored a man-down goal and added one more five minutes later to bring it to a one-goal game. Jelacic won another free position goal, but the Titans tied the game at 9 all four minutes later. Jelacic advanced the Pioneer goal total to 10, only to be tied again by the Titans less than a minute later.
After one scoreless overtime period,
Rebecca McDaniel picked up a clutch save with 1:28 left in the game. A clear attempt pass made it into Jelacic's stick, as she found
Lexi Kaltenberg in front of the cage for the easy game-winner.
Carroll will take a break from conference action to face Concordia Wisconsin on Thursday, April 7 at 4 PM in Mequon.
