Softball Picks up Two Nail Biting Wins at Home

Both of the Pioneers' wins came down to the final out

The Carroll University softball team earned two home victories to remain perfect in conference home games this season. The Pioneers defeated the Augustana College Vikings twice in two thrilling battles. 

GAME 1 | Carroll (WI) 2, Augustana (IL) 1

WAUKESHA, Wis. --The Carroll Pioneers needed 12 innings to finish the job, but secured the 2-1 extra-innings win, walking it off on a single off the bat of senior Madison Wagner to claim victory over the Augustana (IL) Vikings Monday.

Freshman Riley Pavelka (5-2) started in the circle and picked up the win for Carroll (17-10, 9-4). The right-hander went 12 innings, giving up one run on eight hits, allowing two walks and striking out six. Pavelka's 12 innings pitched is tied for the third most by a single pitcher in Carroll softball history. 

Sophomore Madison Palasz led the way offensively for the Pioneers, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame with a triple. Junior Mathena Higgins provided a noteworthy performance as well, going 3-for-5. Senior Kaylee Learman also helped out, going 2-for-5 for Carroll with a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers were trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning when they first put runs on the board. Junior Lauren Harshbarger came across to score the lone run of the inning for Carroll and get them on the board.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the twelfth, when Carroll walked it off on an RBI single off the bat of Wagner.

WAUKESHA, Wis. --The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 3-2 victory against the Vikings on Monday.

Junior Breanna Roberts (5-3) got the win out of the bullpen for Carroll (18-10, 10-4). The right-hander went four innings, giving up one run on five hits.

Offensively, the Pioneers were paced by senior Kaylee Learman, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and an RBI. Senior Madison Wagner furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 3-for-4. Sophomore Madison Palasz also chipped in for Carroll, putting together zero hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Carroll plated two runs off of Augustana pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Learman.

The Pioneers then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fifth inning after the Vikings cut it to 2-1. Carroll scored a run when Palasz drew a walk from senior Ashley Dehmlow that scored senior Sierra Grubor, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Pioneers. Augustana put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Carroll still held on for the 3-2 win.
