Pios Split Final Regular Season Games on Senior Day

The Carroll University softball team finished 1-1 to finish the regular season against the Carthage Firebirds on Senior Day. The Pioneers finish the CCIW regular season with an 11-5 record, the most conference wins in a regular 16 game season since joining the conference in 2017. 

GAME 1 | Carthage 3, Carroll (WI) 1

WAUKESHA, Wis. --Though they had plenty of opportunities, Carroll had a hard time cashing them in, leaving 11 Pioneers on base in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Carthage Firebirds on Thursday.

Junior Grace Bradley (5-6) started and took the loss in the circle for Carroll (18-13, 10-5). The right-hander went 6.1 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out six.

Senior Madison Wagner led the way offensively for the Pioneers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with an RBI. Sophomore Bridget Rath compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Pioneers first put runs on the board in the third inning. Carroll got an RBI single from Wagner, scoring senior Maria Mundt from third base. Carthage then scored two times over the remaining four innings to break the tie and grab the 3-1 win.

GAME 2 | Carroll (WI) 11, Carthage 3

WAUKESHA, Wis. --Sophomore Bridget Rath and senior Madison Wagner each racked up two extra base hits to help propel the Pioneers past the Firebirds 11-3 on Thursday.

Freshman Riley Pavelka (6-3) got the win for Carroll (19-13, 11-5). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on seven hits, allowing two walks and striking out three.

Wagner's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day, and included a double, a home run and three RBI. Rath made her contribution with a double, a home run and two RBI, part of a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Senior Maria Mundt also chipped in for the Pioneers, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Carroll got on the board thanks to Wagner's RBI double with two outs.

The Pioneers then held the Firebirds scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. which brought the Pioneers lead to 4-0.

Carthage narrowed Carroll's lead to 4-1 before the Pioneers stretched the advantage to 6-1 in the third inning. Carroll notched two runs, including one on a solo round-tripper off the bat of Rath.

Carroll held the Firebirds without a run before their offense got in gear the next inning. The Pioneers picked up three runs, one coming across on a home run by Wagner, bringing the Carroll advantage to 9-1.

The Pioneers held Carthage scoreless before building on their lead to 11-1 the following inning. Carroll plated two runs off of Carthage pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Rath. Carthage put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Pioneers still coasted to the 11-3 win.
