Jadyn Holman contributed a team-high 10 kills and two blocks but the Carroll University women's volleyball team lost to Lakeland University 25-15, 22-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-9 in a five-set marathon to begin the opening round of the Forrester Invitational on Friday night.
It was the first road loss of the season for Carroll, which entered the competition riding the momentum of Thursday's statement-making season-opening nonconference sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran College and dropped to 1-1 overall.
Trailing 12-7 in the decisive fifth set, the Pioneers yielded a critical 3-2 run, capped on a victory-clinching kill by Lakeland sophomore outside hitter Susana Stevens.
Kaitlin Gawelski finished with nine kills for Carroll, which generated 55 points, 44 kills, six service aces, five blocks, 68 digs and 43 assists in the showdown.
Cathleen Flannery followed with seven kills, 17 digs and three aces.Â
Maggie McGough had 20 digs and five assists with
Ashley Konecki and
Rebekah Andreae each collecting two blocks.Â
Lindsey Diep added 12 digs and 20 assists for Carroll, which erased an early one-set deficit by answering with back-to-back victories in the second and third sets. The Pioneers had a meet-best 13 kills with a 0.162 hitting percentage in the match-tying second set.
Hailey DeGrave and Katie Metzler each had a meet-high 14 kills for Lakeland, which improved to 1-1 overall.
