Kenosha, Wis. – The Carroll University men's basketball team lost 72-87 to the Carthage College Firebirds. The Pios shot 50.9% from the field. However, 21 turnovers in the game were costly for the Pioneers.
Kobe Simpson led the Pios in scoring and assists with 16 points and two assists on the night.
The Pioneers (4-14, 1-8 CCIW) started off the first half shooting 53.8% from the field on 14-26, while also going 5-9 from the arc. The Pios were too able to grab 28 rebounds on the night. The Pios forced eight turnovers. This included six steals led by
Evan Bland with two. Carroll was also able to get three blocks, all of which came from
Paradisio Dante.
Carroll jumped out to a quick 10-point lead in the first five minutes of the game. This was given by
Justin Steinike and
Aaron Wafford who both contributed; with Wafford making a jump shot and pair of threes, and Steinike making a jump shot and three of his own to push the lead to 15-5. The Firebirds would go on their own 5-0 run to bring the game back under control. Carroll would maintain the lead until the 5:21 mark of the first half before Carthage grabbed a 29-31 lead after going on an 11-0 run. The game was neck and neck until Carthage was able to put together a couple of possessions in the final two minutes of the half, to take a nine-point lead into halftime. Despite Carroll's best efforts, the Firebirds kept their foot on the gas and extended the lead in the second half. Carroll couldn't get the game back within single digits, as the Pios found themselves in foul trouble as well with four Pios having at lead three fouls throughout the game.
The Pios look to get a win on alumni day against North Park University on January 28, at 4:15 PM in Waukesha, Wis.
