Carroll Tops Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Carroll's women's basketball team earned their second win in as many days Sunday afternoon, defeating Cornell (Iowa) 89-60 in the second and final day of the Cornell Classic. The Pioneers shot 52 percent (33-63) from the field, including 43 percent (6-14) from 3-point range, while scoring 42 points in the paint.

Carroll (2-0) never trailed in the game, going on a 14-2 run to take a 13-point lead in the final minutes of the first quarter. Cornell (0-3) would cut that lead to six mid-way through the second period, but the Pioneers answered by ending the half on a 21-8 run to take a 19-point lead into halftime.

Carroll's largest lead of the game came late in the fourth quarter when Lauren Soyke converted a layup to put the Pios up by 33. They also out-rebounded the Rams 37-28, while forcing 20 turnovers, which they converted into 27 points.

Olivia Rangel led the Pios in scoring for the second consecutive game, pouring in 24 points to go along with four rebounds, eight assists, and three steals, en route to All-Tournament honors. Emilie Wizner added 15 points, while Natalie Gricius chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Natalie Palzkill recorded 10 points and five assists in 19 minutes of action.

Cornell was led by Kali March's 13 points and four assists. Rachael Adewusi and Ani'ja Simmons each scored 12 points for the Rams, to go along with six and four rebounds, respectively.

The Pioneers will try to continue their early-season momentum on Tuesday when they'll play their home opener against Beloit College. That game will begin at 7 p.m. at Van Male Fieldhouse in Waukesha, Wis.
