WHITEWATER, Wis. - Carroll's women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season Saturday night, falling to ninth-ranked UW-Whitewater by a score of 78-64. UW-W had the hot hand all night, shooting 61 percent (30-49) from the floor, including 47 percent (8-17) from 3-point range. The Pioneers forced 20 turnovers, which they turned into 27 points.
Carroll (3-1) shot at least 50 percent in all but one quarter, as they got off to a slow start with a 2-for-16 performance in the opening quarter.
Lauren Soyke scored the team's first six points, giving Carroll a 6-2 lead with six and a half minutes left in the period, before UW-Whiteater (4-0) scored the next 16 points to take an 18-6 lead entering the second quarter. Carroll shot 60 percent in that period, which saw them outscore the Warhawks 22-18, cutting the deficit to eight at halftime.
UW-Whitewater took a double digit lead on an Aleah Grundahl layup with three and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter, en route to a 14-point advantage at the end of the quarter. The Warhawks would lead by double digits the rest of the way, shooting 80 percent (8-10) in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.
Carroll's bench outscored UW-W's reserves by a 20-11 margin.
Natalie Gricius led the Pioneers with 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Soyke added 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting, while
Olivia Rangel chipped in with 10 points and a team-high six assists.
The Warhawks scored 17 second-chance points in the game. They were led by Grundahl's game-highs of 21 points and seven rebounds, to go along with five assists. Kacie Carollo added 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while adding five rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Maggie Trautsch also scored in double figures with 12.
Carroll's schedule won't get much easier, as they'll host #22 University of Chicago on Tuesday. That game will begin at 7 p.m. at Van Male Fieldhouse in Waukesha, Wis., and will be preceded by the men's game against Lake Forest at 5 p.m.
