WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's women's basketball team played their second consecutive game against a ranked opponent Tuesday night, giving #22 University of Chicago all they could handle before falling to the Maroons in overtime by a score of 74-68. That marks just the fourth loss in Carroll's last 26 home games, solidifying the Pioneers' home court as one of the toughest to play.
The game was tightly contested throughout the night, featuring seven ties and seven lead changes. Carroll (3-2) came out of the gates firing, shooting 61 percent (11-18) in the first quarter to take a 26-19 lead after the first period. Despite scoring seven points in the second quarter, the Pioneers still managed to go into halftime with a narrow lead, holding a 33-32 lead at intermission.
Chicago (5-0) would score the first five points in the second half to take the lead, which they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the half. Chicago took a seven-point lead on a 3-pointer by Kendall Braaten with just under four minutes left in regulation. Just as the game seemed as if it were decided, Carroll came storming back, scoring the final seven points of regulation, which was capped by a
Ryann Wendt layup to knot the score up at 61, which is where it would stand at the end of regulation.
In the extra frame, Braaten hit another 3-pointer on the opening possession. Chicago would extend that lead to seven with under two minutes to play. Carroll again battled back however, cutting that lead to two with one minute remaining on a layup by
Emilie Wizner. That would be Carroll's final points of the game, as Chicago closed out the hard-fought victory with a bucket and a pair of free throws down the stretch.
