WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's women's basketball team shot 54 percent (37-68) from the field Wednesday night, including 35 percent (6-17) from 3-point range, en route to a convincing 86-49 victory against non-conference foe St. Norbert College. The Pioneers never trailed in the contest, limiting SNC to just 30 percent (19-63) shooting on the night, while out-rebounding the Green Knights 48-26.
Olivia Rangel scored the first points of the game for the Pioneers (8-3), which was answered by a tying basket from SNC's Taylor Thiry.
Natalie Gricius then gave Carroll the lead for good, making the score 4-2 with a layup just three minutes into the contest. That was part of seven consecutive Pio points, which was capped by a 3-pointer from
Emilie Wizner. After taking a 13-8 lead into the second quarter, the Pioneers torched the nets to a tune of 79 percent (11-14) in that period to grab a 38-31 halftime advantage.
Carroll continued their domination in the second half, which saw them outscore St. Norbert 48-18, including 28-8 in the third quarter to put the game on ice. The Pioneers outscored the Green Knights (4-6) by a 52-30 margin, while also outscoring SNC in fast break points (17-0).
Rangel led all scorers with 21 points on 10-for-16 shooting, to go along with eight rebounds. Gricius added 19 points, with a trio of 3-pointers, and seven boards, while Wizner chipped in with 11 points.
Allison Thompson gave the Pios a boost off the bench with an eight point, eight rebound effort, which included three blocked shots.
St. Norbert was led by Thiry's 17 points in 19 minutes. Casey Jepson added nine points, while Marnie Kahl scored six points in 16 minutes off the bench.
The Pioneers will now get ready for some fun in the sun, as they will travel to Puerto Rico next week for a holiday tournament where they will play their next two games. Carroll will battle Haverford College on December 29 at 2 p.m., before facing McMurry University the following day. Both games will be played in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
