GUAYNABO, PUERTO RICO - Carroll's women's basketball team made the jaunt to Puerto Rico this week, with a resounding 74-38 victory over Haverford College on the first day of the two-day Puerto Rico Clasico. The Pioneers led from start to finish, scoring 22 points off 19 Haverford turnovers. Carroll also scored 23 fast-break points and outscored Haverford in the paint 44-12, while also limiting them to just 25 percent (13-53) shooting on the day.
Carroll (9-3) scored the first four points of the contest on baskets from
Emilie Wizner and
Olivia Rangel. With two and a half minutes in the opening quarter, Haverford (3-6) trailed by four, but the Pioneers scored the final 10 points of the period to take a 24-10 lead into the second quarter. Carroll would lead by double digits the rest of the way, leading by as many as 21 points and taking a 34-18 lead into halftime.
The Pios continued to keep their foot on the gas in the second half, scoring the first seven points of the third quarter, with five of those coming from Wizner. They would take a 33-point advantage in the final seconds of that period on a 3-pointer by
Ryann Wendt, and would take their largest lead of 42 on a free throw by
Kacy Kratz mid-way through the final period.
Rangel led all scorers with 14 points, to go along with three assists and two rebounds. Wendt added 12 points and four rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench on 5-of-9 shooting, making both of her 3-point attempts. Wizner and
Chloe Halverson each added 11 points. The Pioneers shot 46 percent (30-for-65) on the day.
Haverford was led by Audrey Jakway's 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Gia Flamini added nine points, while Ally Landau chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Carroll now has now won four games in a row and six of their last seven. They have one game remaining at the Puerto Rico Clasico, as they'll battle McMurry University on Saturday at Noon (CST).
