MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Carroll University women's lacrosse team started hot in the first quarter and rode their score to a 10-4 win against Hamline on Saturday to begin the 2023 season.
Clara Jelacic scored her 250
th career goal and finished with four total while having five draw controls, five ground balls, and five caused turnovers.
Katrina Hardin led with seven shots on goals.
The Pioneers (1-0) ripped off 23 shots, including 13 in the first half, 19 of which were on goal.
Rebecca McDaniel faced 14 shots, seven on target, and recorded five saves with two goals allowed in her win. Carroll converted 22-29 clear attempts, with a 100% performance in the second quarter going 5-5. The Pios earned 24 ground balls and took three free position shots.
Carroll began the game losing the draw, but Hardin knocked it away forcing the first turnover of the season. The Pios struggled early on to keep possession and to successfully clear the defense, but Carroll finally settled in after Jelacic scored the first two goals of the season. Jelacic's second goal pushed her to 250 all-time. Hardin followed up Jelacic with one of her own, and
Janu Patel and
Carley Hall wrapped up the first quarter scoring. Hamline scored the first of the second quarter, but Hall responded on an assist from Hardin with 2:19 left until halftime.
With a player-up in the third quarter, Hardin collected her second goal of the season on a pass from
Rebecca Hallman during a free-position attempt. Hamline responded less than two minutes later, but the Pios held strong the rest of the third quarter, causing four turnovers. Jelacic and
Grace Brockman scored each for Carroll in the fourth quarter after two goals from Hamline. Jelacic and
Lexi Kaltenberg combined for the nail in the coffin with 3:50 remaining.
The Pioneers spend the night in Minneapolis and will take on Augsburg tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, February 19.
