BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Carroll University men's indoor track and field team surpassed its pre-championship coaches poll rankings and finished in fifth place at the 2023 CCIW Indoor Track and Field Championships. Carroll scored 64 points, and crowned two CCIW Champions in
Peter Marra and
David Burgess, while
Steven Hermsen broke his school record.
In track events, Marra crossed the line first in the 60m hurdles race, coming in with a time of 8.43. Marra was just .05 off his school record and PR-breaking performance from earlier this season.
Nathan Raatz was edged by less than a second in the 400m dash, finishing with a 50.31 and eight team points.
Kevin Lind had a busy day, first finishing in sixth in the 200m dash, and eighth in the 60m dash. Peter Cary grabbed eighth in the 3000m run on the distance side for one extra team point. The men's 4x400 squad of Marra,
Trenton Nickel, River Strued, and Raatz finished in fifth with a 3:26.89.
In field events, Burgess claimed the high jump title with a 1.94-meter jump he hit on his second attempt. Burgess cleared through his first four jumps prior in one attempt each. TJ Fullilove just missed all-conference honors in the high jump but picked them up with a seventh-place triple jump performance. In the shot put,
Steven Hermsen's 16.32m school record came on his last attempt in his heat. Hermsen came close with another 16.20m through in the finals.
Will Campbell added another all-conference finish under his belt with an eighth-place finish in the shot put as well.
A select group of Pioneers will travel around the region next week trying to improve their marks to qualify for the 2023 NCAA DIII Indoor Track and Field National Championships.
