Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University men's lacrosse team lost against Edgewood College 6-11. Freshman
Ethan Phillips led the way for the Pioneers with a season-high three goals on the day. Three other Pioneers were able to score goals as well.
The Pioneers (1-2) got up a season-high 39 shots during the game and capitalized on six of the shot attempts getting 16 shots on goal. This is a promising statistic as this young team continues to gain confidence offensively.
Spencer Lautner and
Brady Raczkowski led the team in ground balls and caused turnovers, as Carroll grabbed 39 ground balls and forced 33 turnovers.
Jake Gehl faced 47 shots throughout the game, with 29 shots on target. Gehl was able to make another season-high 18 saves throughout the game.
Carroll's
Jake Wright was able to get the first shot on goal of the day, but the Eagles would get a save. Following the save Edgewood would take the ball down and score to open the game 0-1. Less than 30 seconds later the Eagles would score again taking an early 0-2 lead. Carroll would fight to gain some momentum back as Ethan found his first goal of the game with 11:00 minutes left in the period. However, with 10:43 to go in the period, the Eagles would score again to extend their lead to 1-3. Carroll wouldn't back down as Ethan once again answered one minute later to make it a one-point game. Edgewood would score one more goal to make it a 2-4 game after the first period. Coming out of the second period
Roman Stanley would score within the first two minutes to make it a one-possession game once again. The Eagles would have another answer with a 4-0 run making it 3-8 with 5:56 left in the first half. Carroll wouldn't back down as
Brandon Welsek gave the Pioneers a goal to send them into the half down 4-8. After both teams adjusted at halftime, the game would become a defensive battle. The first goal of the half would come until 10 minutes in as Ethan would find his third of the day. Edgewood would score in the final seconds of the period to push their lead back to four. Coming into the fourth period down 5-9 Carroll knew they would have to make some plays offensively. However, they couldn't get their offense sparked as Edgewood would score two straight goals to take a 5-11 lead with 10:18 to go in the game.
Sam Kopshinsky would score one more final goal for the Pioneers. It was just too little too late as the Eagles would escape with a 6-11 victory.
The Pioneers will face Monmouth College on Saturday, Mar. 4 at Schneider Stadium for their final home game before spring break.
