Pios Stunned on Last Minute Goal

Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University men's lacrosse team lost against Monmouth College 7-8 Freshman Ethan Phillips led the way once again for the Pioneers, scoring three goals on the day. Brandon Welsek adds two goals himself.

The Pioneers (1-3) shot the ball a season-high 51 times during the game and capitalized on seven of the shot attempts getting 22 shots on goal. The young core of the Pioneers continues to grow and gain confidence each game. Spencer Lautner led the team in ground balls and caused turnovers, as Carroll grabbed 31 ground balls and forced 11 turnovers. Jake Gehl faced 47 shots throughout the game, with 29 shots on target. Gehl was able to make another season-high 13 saves throughout the game.

Starting off the game the Pios struck first on a Welsek goal three minutes into the game. The Pios would go on to take a 2-0 lead with 6:46 to go on a Phillips goal. Carroll would continue attacking the goal, but a turnover would lead to a goal putting Monmouth on the board. The first period would end with the Pios up 2-1. Coming out of the second period the Scots scored a quick goal to even the score. One minute later Phillips was able to score again to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead. The two teams would then get into a defensive battle. Monmouth got on the board to even the score with 1:49 to go in the half. That would be the final goal of the half. At the beginning of the second half, the two teams continued the defensive feud. Halfway through the third period, Phillips would score his third goal of the night to take a 4-3 lead. The offense would pick up as the Scots would answer back five seconds after to even the score. With 3:35 to go in the period, Welsek would score to give the lead back to Pios. Then with 0:10 to go in the period Monmouth would score a goal to even things up 5-5. However, Jake Wright would win the following faceoff taking all the way to score with just three seconds left in the period. The Scots came out swinging in the final period evening the score just 5 seconds into the period. Senior Josh Kovach would step up less than a minute later to help give the Pioneers a 7-6 lead with 14:06 to go in the game. The two teams would get back to a defensive battle for most of the quarter, but with 4:30 to go in the game the Scots would so two unanswered goals to seal the game 7-8.

The Pioneers will face LaGrange College on Saturday, Mar. 11 in Nashville, Tenn. in the first of six-game road series for the Pioneers.
