Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University men's lacrosse team won their last non-conference game of the year. The Pios came ready to play and walked away with an 8-3 victory over Concordia Chicago. Freshman
Brandon Welsek led the way for the Pioneers with five total points off three goals and two assists. Four other Pioneers contributed goals on the night.
The Pioneers (3-8) got up a season-high 57 shots during the game and get 21 shots on goal. Carroll was able to tally up a season-high 14 points, consisting of six assists and eight goals.
Jake Gehl and
Matthew Hehr faced just 17 shots throughout the game, with 10 shots on target. Gehl was able to make six saves and Hehr contributed one save himself.
Spencer Lautner and Welsek led the team in ground balls with six apiece. The team reached a season-high 46 ground balls throughout the game.
Sam Kopshinsky caused six of Carroll's 13 turnovers on the night.
Starting the game, Carroll got up four quick shots in the first minute of the game. Welsek was able to find the back of the net first, three minutes into the period. This would spark a 3-0 run in the period as Brady Revenue added a goal and Welsek got his second of the day. Up three Carroll would start the second period off strong as
Josh Kovach would score to take a 4-0 lead with 13:46 to go in the half. This would be the final score of the half, as Carroll's defense showed up leaving the Cougars scoreless in the first half. Coming out of the half
Ethan Phillips would help push Carroll's lead to five. Finally, five minutes into the second half Concordia Chicago would end Carroll's run cutting the lead to 5-1. Carroll would answer, as Phillips would find the back of the net less than a minute later pushing the lead back up to five. With under two minutes to go in the third period, Carroll would manage to score two more goals from Welsek and
Zachary Szuba to take an 8-1 lead into the final period. Carroll would slow the tempo of the game down, but give up two goals with under two minutes to go in the game. As Carroll would walk away with an 8-3 victory.
The Pioneers start conference play against Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, April 1. The game will start at 1:00 PM at Schneider Stadium in Waukesha, Wis.
