Carroll Men’s Lacrosse Stumbles Against Illinois Wesleyan

Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University men's lacrosse team lost the first conference game of the year 3-19 against Illinois Wesleyan. Brandon Welsek, Spencer Lautner, and Jake Kopocis scored all three of Carroll's goals on the day.

The Pioneers (3-9) shot the ball 29 times throughout the game. As the Pios capitalized on three of the shot attempts getting eight shots on goal. Jake Gehl faced 55 shots throughout the game, with 40 shots on target. Gehl was able to make 21 saves. Jake Wright led the team in ground balls with nine and won 10-21 faceoffs throughout the game. Sam Kopshinsky and Zachary Szuba each caused three turnovers apiece to help Carroll reach 12 on the day.

Carroll would struggle out of the gates as the Titans would score 11 unanswered goals in the first ten minutes of play. This would put Carroll in a 0-11 deficit after the first period. The Pioneers' defense would pick it up only allowing two goals in the second period, but the offense would stall. Illinois Wesleyan would take a 0-13 lead at the half. Carroll would continue to fight defensively, but the Pios just couldn't get their offense going as they would remain scoreless throughout the third period. Finally, with 9:03 to go in the game, Kopocis would find the back of the net to make it a 1-18 ball game. The Titans would score one more time to take an 18-point lead. It would be too little too late for Carroll as Welsek and Lautner would both convert in the final two minutes of the game. Giving Illinois Wesleyan a 19-3 victory over Carroll.

The Pioneers travel to Kenosha, Wis. on Friday, April 7. Carroll will be taking on Transylvania University in a conference neutral site game at 7:00 PM.
