ROCHESTER, NY –
Steven Hermsen of Carroll University men's outdoor track and field was crowned the 2023 NCAA DIII Discus National Champion at the NCAA DIII Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday afternoon from Rochester, New York. Hermsen becomes just the third discus thrower in DIII history to win the title three times, and just the second to win it in three consecutive seasons.
Hersmen, a graduate student from De Pere, Wisconsin, qualified for the finals with a distance of 55.35m on his second attempt in his flight. Hermsen was passed on the third attempt In flight two by Yakob Ekoue of Wis.-Eau Claire. Entering finals, Hermsen fouled on his first attempt, passed Ekoue with a throw of 56.84m, and fouled on his final attempt. Ekoue fouled his final three attempts, keeping Hermsen in the top spot. Hermsen won by a margin of 29 centimeters. Hermsen claims his fifth All-American title with the win as well.
Hermsen will continue the weekend in shot put on Friday, followed by hammer on Saturday.
