Six Pioneers earned medals at the 2023 CCIW Championships

Hermsen Named Co-Field Athlete of the Meet; Team Finishes Fifth

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Carroll University men's track and field team completed its regular season after the completion of the 2023 CCIW Track and Field Championships. The Pioneers finished in fifth scoring 94 team points.
 
In track events, Peter Marra set new PRs and a new school record in his hurdle events. Marra was the silver medal winner in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.88. Marra also finished runner-up in the 400 hurdles, coming in with a new school-record time of 53.58. Marra breaks a 30-year-old record in Carroll history. Trenton Nickel came around the corner in the 400m with a fourth-place finish with a time of 49.80. Kevin Lind finished in seventh to score two team points in an 11.00-second race. In the 5K, Kyle Adams and Spencer Kirsteatter finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth place to score seven team points with low 15-minute times. The relay teams of the 4x100m (Marra, Carter Ratcliff, Nickel, Lind) finished fourth with a 41.95-second race, and the 4x400m crew (Marra, Nickel, Ratcliff, and Nathan Raatz) finished third with a finish in 3:19.54.
 
In field events, Steven Hermsen was chosen as the CCIW Field Student-Athlete of the Meet for the third season in a row. Hermsen won the men's discus throw with a mark of 56.62m, over nine meters farther than second place. Hermsen also broke his school record PR in the shot put, coming in second place with a 16.49m toss. Will Campbell and Brady Reusser both PR'd and qualified for finals in the shot put, while Campbell gained four team points in the discus with a throw over 44 meters.
 
Groups of Pioneers will continue to compete this spring in hopes of increasing their marks towards school records and exceeding marks towards national qualification.
