Pioneers advance to CCIW Tournament for third consecutive year

Despite being swept by regular-season conference champion Augustana, Carroll claims No. 6 seed in prestigious league competition

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team was swept first-place No. 20-ranked Augustana College in a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Frame Park on Saturday afternoon, losing the opener 20-1 in seven innings and 9-6 in the second game.
It was the regular-season finale for Carroll, which dropped to 8-10 in the conference standings and 16-21 overall with the Alumni Day effort.
Despite the setback in making their final home-field appearance of the season, the Pioneers earned a berth in the prestigious upcoming CCIW Tournament for the third consecutive year.
Augustana won the regular-season championship outright (16-2), North Central finished second (12-6), Millikin placed third (11-7), Illinois Wesleyan and North Park tied for fourth (9-9) and Carroll was sixth (8-10) to round out the six-team field in the double-elimination tournament.

GAME 1
Trevor Benz hit a solo home run (his fourth of the season) in the bottom of the first inning to register one of the Pioneers' two hits in the contest. Brody Ferko followed with a single to center field in the seventh.
Carroll utilized four pitchers in the showdown including starter Brett Buzzelli, Joey Rivera, Conor Dunlavy and Jexel Valentin.
Buzzelli, a junior right-hander, took the loss for Carroll.
Augustana amassed 22 hits in the battle (including nine for extra bases), scoring six runs in the top of the first and eight unanswered runs in the second.

GAME 2
Justin Baker went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer (his third of the season) in the bottom of the fifth to help propel a nine-hit offensive attack for Carroll.
Benz contributed a double with Benton Holly, Nick Angus, Cole Haugh, Luke Blaha, Dalen Lamberson and Joey Appino each following with one hit.
The Pioneers scored four runs on four hits and took advantage of an error in the first, sparked on an RBI ground out by Holly, a run-scoring single to right field by Angus, an RBI single to right-center field by Blaha and a run-scoring single to center field by Lamberson.
Augustana, which finished with 10 hits, responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to trim the deficit to 4-3.
Baker's two-run blast extended the lead to 6-3 in the fifth.
The lead was short lived as Augustana responded with six runs on three hits and took advantage of an error in what proved to be a decisive top of sixth.
Carroll used five pitchers including starter Scotty Starovich, Erik Jaschinski, Connor Kelly, Andy Buskohl and Connor Nolen.
Kelly, a senior right-hander from Racine, Wis., took the loss by allowing three earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks through two complete innings of work.
