SANDUSKY, Ohio - Carroll's Volleyball team picked up their first win of the 2023 season Saturday morning, defeating Allegheny in four sets in the early morning session of the Cedar Point Tournament. The Pioneers would fall to Case Western Reserve in three sets to close out the tournament.
In the day's first match, the Pioneers (1-3) dropped the first set 18-25, but then rattled off wins in three straight sets against Allegheny (25-21, 25-14, and 25-23), giving first-year Head Coach Emma Mertler her first career victory.
Carroll also held the advantage in kills (49-39), while recording 12 service aces and 45 assists. The Pios finished the match with a hitting percentage of .183, while holding Allegheny to a .132 hitting percentage.
Pacing the Pioneers in the victory was
Katie Jensen, who finished with a match-best 17 kills, to go along with 10 digs, three block assists, and one service ace.
Kaitlin Gawelski also made her presence felt with 11 kills and 15 digs, and three service aces.
Rebekah Andreae also chipped in with nine kills, while
Maggie McGough led the team in digs, with 21.
Carroll will be in action again on Friday when they'll take part in the St. Norbert Invite. That match will begin at 5 p.m. in De Pere, Wis. against Dominican (Ill.)
