WHITEWATER, Wis. - Several members of the Carroll University women's tennis team competed in the challenging Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships (hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater) over the weekend.
The singles and doubles champions from the competition advance to the prestigious upcoming ITA National Small College Championships.
Erin Horzewski, a sophomore from Milwaukee, Wis., finished second overall in the singles category (flight A) to top the list of strong individuals performances for Carroll, falling in straight sets in Saturday's finals to Maia Samuelson of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 6-1, 6-1.
Horzewski advanced to the finals by defeating Emily Gutknecht of Milwaukee School of Engineering in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 in Friday's round of 16.
In Friday afternoon's quarterfinals, Horzewski defeated Wartburg's Bailey Sinnwell 6-0, 6-1. She ousted Kira Young of St. Benedict in Saturday's semifinals 6-1, 6-2.
Katherine Trifilio, a freshman from Oak Park, Ill., advanced to the semifinals in singles (flight B), eventually losing to Savahan Haugen of Macalster 6-2, 6-1.
Aalaiya Jacklin, a sophomore from Racine, Wis., fell in the quarterfinals (flight D) to Chloe Leithold of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 6-4, 6-4.
The ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of eight respective regional champions and eight runners-up (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, and junior/community colleges.
More than 8,000 student athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, junior and community colleges compete at one of the 85 United States Tennis Association/ITA regional championships held throughout the country.
