CHICAGO, Ill. - Ranked #13 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, the Carroll University women's basketball team suffered an 81-70 loss at the University of Chicago Tuesday night. Chicago shot 57 percent (28-49) from the field to remain undefeated (6-0) on the season, while Carroll converted 43 percent (25-58) of their shots. This marks the third consecutive year that Chicago has won in this series.
Carroll's only lead of the night came in the game's opening minute when
Olivia Rangel broke a scoreless tie. Chicago would score the next 11 points to take control of the game early. Another Rangel basket cut Chicago's lead to seven, before the Maroons ended the quarter with four unanswered points to take a 15-4 lead into the second period. Carroll (4-2) would turn things on in that quarter, going on a 16-7 run, capped by an
Emilie Wizner 3-pointer, to cut Chicago's lead to two. The Maroons would go up by eight with one minute remaining in the half, but Carroll scored the final five points on a
Natalie Gricius layup and Rangel 3-pointer, cutting the lead to 29-26 at the break.
Chicago again built a double digit lead in the third quarter, using a 19-5 run to take their largest lead of 17, but Carroll continued to fight. They would cut that lead to six on a pair of
Natalie Palzkill free throws with four minutes remaining, but that's as close as they'd get the rest of the night.
Rangel led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting, to go along with a team-high five assists. Gricius added 21 points and five rebounds, while making three of the team's 10 three-pointers.
Chicago was led by Bella Alfaro's 15 points, four rebounds, and six assists, while Bri Simpson scored 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench. Sophia North chipped in with 12 points, while Kate Gross and Kasi Samuda each scored 11.
The Pioneers will try to rebound Saturday when they'll travel to Ripon College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. from Weiske Gymnasium inside Willmore Center in Ripon, Wis.
