WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's early-season gauntlet of games continued Saturday afternoon for the Pioneers' women's basketball team, as they suffered an 80-71 loss to fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan. The Pios took a five-point lead into the final quarter, but Illinois Wesleyan outscored them 29-15 in that period, behind a 67 percent (10-15) shooting performance.
Carroll (5-4, 1-1 CCIW) led for the first few minutes of the contest, before Illinois Wesleyan (8-0, 2-0 CCIW) ended the quarter on a 14-6 run to take a 16-11 lead into the second period. The Titans scored the first basket of the quarter, but Carroll answered with nine consecutive points to tie the score at 19. Freshman Alayna Pealber connected on a 3-pointer in the final minute to give the Pioneers a 37-28 halftime lead after outscoring IWU 26-12 in the quarter.
The Pios continued to control the game in the second half, going up by as many as 11 points, but Illinois Wesleyan would claw back into the game, scoring nine consecutive points in the next minute and a half. A
Julia Lokker 3-pointer would later put Carroll back up by nine, but IWU would whittle that down to a five-point advantage heading into the final quarter.
Olivia Rangel gave the Pios a seven-point lead with a basket on the opening possession, but the Titans scored the next 10 points to take the lead for good.
Carroll finished the game shooting 48 percent (30-62) from the floor, including 29 percent (5-18) from 3-point range.
Natalie Gricius led the team with 20 points on 10-of-17 shooting, to go along with eight rebounds. Rangel added 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assisnts, while
Emilie Wizner scored seven points.
Illinois Wesleyan shot 50 percent (31-62) on the night, while converting 80 percent (16-20) of their free throws. They were led by Ava Bardic's 23 points. Lauren Huber and Caite Knutson added 19 and 15 points, respectively, while combining for 17 rebounds.
The Pioneers will look to rebound next weekend when they'll travel to North Central (IL). That game will begin at 5 p.m. in Naperville, Ill.
