MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Carroll's women's lacrosse team opened the 2024 season in style Saturday night with a 19-8 win against Hamline University. That is tied for the 10th-most single game goals in Carroll history, four shy of the school record. That marks the Pioneers' most goals in a game since scoring 19 against Concordia (Wis.) during the 2022 season.
Carroll (1-0) wasted no time getting on the board, as freshman
Elizabeth Wang broke a scoreless tie just two minutes into the contest. Laurent Fricke then added a pair of goals in a one minute span, before Hamline's Analisa Aragon gave the Pipers their first point of the night.
Rebecca Hallman then scored the final goal of the opening quarter, before scoring the first two of the second, giving the Pioneers a 7-1 lead. Hamline (0-1) then scored another goal, but Fricke answered with a goal off a Hallman assist, giving her a hat trick before halftime. Wang would also score once more, followed by a Hamline goal in the final seconds of the half, giving Carroll a 9-3 advantage as the teams went to the locker rooms.
Hamline scored the first two goals of the second half, followed by a Pioneer goal by
Grace Brockman, but Hamline would get that goal back to cut the lead to 10-6. Carroll then scored the next four goals, coming from Brockman, Hallman, and two by
Abby Stas. Hamline answered with a goal of their own early in the fourth quarter, but four straight goals, two apiece by Hallman and Wang, put the game out of reach.
Samantha Hurd rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers with a goal in the final minutes.
Hallman led all players with six goals for the Pioneers, while adding two assists. Wang finished with four goals and the team's other assist, while Fricke added three goals. Brockman and Stas each scored two goals on the night.
Devon Duym and
Sydney Everett combined to save three shots at goalkeeper for the Pioneers.
Aoi Suzuki led Hamline with three goals, while Maitland Luksan chipped in with a pair of scores. Justine Case started in goal for the Pipers, making nine saves in 50 minutes of work, before giving way to Lola Brouwer.
The Pios will be in action again on Sunday when they'll travel to Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minn. at 1 p.m.
