PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. -
Josie Peterson won the 50-meter freestyle in a lifetime-best 24.17 seconds as the Carroll women's swimming and diving team competed at the prestigious College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championships at the RecPlex Aquatic Center on Thursday.
It was the second official day of competition in the meet, with Carroll currently sitting in fifth place with 86 points.
For Peterson, a junior from Jefferson, Wis., the standout individual accomplishment took on added significance as it was her second consecutive conference championship in the event. That earned All-Conference honors for Peterson, while also improving on last year's victory with a lifetime-best time, besting her previous lifetime best by .03 seconds. Her strong finish was just .04 seconds shy of the Carroll program record of 24.13, established by former standout Morgan Stokes in 2014.
Peterson showcased her leadership by swimming the opening leg of the fifth-place 200 freestyle relay (also consisting of
Alexandria Ostopowicz,
Anina Lee and
Nicole Johnson), clocking a time of 1:40.91.
Carroll's 400 medley relay (comprised of
Morgan Toupal,
Kailee Sitter, Johnson and Ostopowicz), was sixth with a time of 4:18.10.
Other individuals finishing within the top 20 were:
Chopper Ceshker, 15th in the 500 freestyle (5:32.07) and
Kelly Gordan, 15th in 200 individual medley (2:18.83).
Carroll is currently in fifth place in the men's portion of the meet with 64 points.
The Pioneers' 200 freestyle relay (consisting of
Dylan Klang, Jack Madigan,
David Gonzales Jr. and
Edward McConnaha) was fifth with a time of 1:29.61.
The 400 medley relay finished sixth (consisting of McConnaha, Gonzales Jr.,
Augusto Ureta, and Klang), clocking a time of 3:47.11.
Cole Faust added a 13th-place finish in the 500 freestyle.
The Pioneers will be in action again on Friday for the second of the three-day swimming competition.
