NEW BERLIN, Wis. - The Carroll University men's tennis team outlasted Milwaukee School of Engineering 5-4 in a hard-fought non-conference dual meet at the Princeton Club on Friday night. It was the fifth home-court dual victory of the season for Carroll, which improved to 6-2 overall with the gritty effort.
The Pioneers were propelled by three critical, pressure-packed victories in the singles flight, winning twice in three sets.
Daniel Ezcurra rebounded from an early one-set deficit to earn a determined three-set victory at No. 2 singles for Carroll, defeating MSOE's Carlos Calabuig-Patino 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3).
Andrew LaBelle followed with a strong, straight-set victory at No. 3 singles for the Pioneers, defeating Miguel Lopez 6-3, 6-1.
Jack McCaffery claimed a three-set victory at No. 6 singles, showcasing his resilience by bouncing back from a one-set deficit to defeat MSOE's Jannik Michaelis 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3).
Carroll's No. 1 doubles team of Ezcurra and
Adrian Gomez won 8-5. The No. 3 tandem of McCaffery and
Felix Persson rounded out the list of victories for the Pioneers, winning 8-7 (8-6).
The Pioneers will be in action again next week when they'll compete at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina as part of their 2024 Spring Break trip from March 10-14.
