PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Carroll baseball team lost their second game of the Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge Tuesday night, falling to Wisconsin-Platteville by a score of 11-1 in seven innings. The defeat is the third-straight loss the Pioneers have suffered.
In a day with struggles at the plate across the lineup, Joey Appino collected two hits in four at-bats to lead the Pios. Appino has been a consistent leadoff hitter for Carroll, tallying 16 hits in 41 at-bats for a .390 batting average.
Once again, the Pioneers found themselves at a deficit after one inning, going down 3-0 after a hot start from Platteville. The first hit of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Lane Scott sending a single into left field. Carroll would finally crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when Nick Angus scored on a past ball. The Pios were unable to keep offensive momentum going after that, as Platteville pushed the game to 10 runs and shutout Carroll, ending with a score of 11-1.
The Pioneers utilized three pitchers in the defeat including starter Dylan Eckrote, Nate Sternig, Owen Ripley, Joey Rivera, and Brady LaMack. The group combined for five strikeouts, giving up 11 hits, while allowing 10 earned runs and walking 10 batters. Eckrote and LaMack both collected two strikeouts on the day to lead the Pioneers on the mound.
Carroll will now play Sewanee on Thursday in a game that was moved up a couple days due to potential rain this weekend. Thursday's game will begin at Noon Central Tim in Pensacola, Fla.
